As investors keep an eye on possible intervention moves, the yen is strengthening

The Japanese yen appreciated by 0.19% to 157.41 versus the dollar on Wednesday.

The focus is now on whether both the Japanese and the U.S. authorities would continue with their currency activities following the initial wave of intervention, according to Vincent Chung, co-portfolio manager of the diversified income bond strategy at T. Rowe Price.

“Already, the yen has recovered quite a significant amount of underperformance versus other currencies from Asia, such as the Korean won. With continued intervention, the yen could strengthen even more against the dollar,” Chung commented in a note on Wednesday.

Extended intervention could lead to further appreciation of the yen despite doubts that intervention would lead to a sustained recovery, Chung said.
